Remaining in Faith When Things Seem Impossible

Life is full of challenges, and at times, the weight of our circumstances can feel overwhelming. Whether it's a personal struggle, loss, sickness, or the uncertainty of the future, we are often left feeling as though the odds are stacked against us. During these moments, the temptation to give in to doubt or despair can be powerful. However, as Christians, we are called to live by faith, even when things seem impossible.

The Bible teaches us that faith is not just a feeling but a choice—a decision to trust in God's promises regardless of the circumstances. Hebrews 11:1 reminds us, “Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.” This definition of faith highlights the core belief in a God who is faithful, even when the world around us appears chaotic or hostile.

Trusting God’s Sovereignty

One of the first things to remember when facing the impossible is that God is sovereign over all things. His wisdom and understanding far surpass our own, and His ways are higher than our ways (Isaiah 55:9). Sometimes, our immediate view of a situation may make it seem insurmountable. However, we can trust that God is in control, and nothing is beyond His power to handle.

Think of the Israelites standing before the Red Sea. Their backs were to the ocean, and Pharaoh’s army was closing in. It must have seemed like certain destruction. Yet, God parted the sea, leading them to safety (Exodus 14:21-22). In the same way, when we face seemingly impossible circumstances, we can trust that God is faithful to make a way when there appears to be no way.

Holding on to God’s Promises

In times of doubt, we must cling to the promises God has made to us in His Word. Romans 8:28 assures us that “we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.” This is a profound reminder that even in our trials, God is working behind the scenes for our good and His glory.

In moments of weakness, God promises His strength. Isaiah 40:29-31 tells us, “He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak. Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength.” We may not always understand why we go through hard times, but we can trust that God’s plans for us are good, and He will equip us to endure.

Faith is Not Denial, But Trust

It's important to note that faith does not mean denying the reality of difficult circumstances. Being in faith doesn’t mean ignoring the struggles or pretending that things are fine when they are not. Rather, faith means acknowledging our circumstances but choosing to trust God’s ability to see us through.

In 2 Corinthians 12:9, Paul shares his experience of struggling with a "thorn in the flesh," a persistent hardship he asked God to remove. But God responded, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” In his weakness, Paul found strength in God. Similarly, we must remember that faith isn’t about pretending everything is okay, but about trusting God even when our world feels far from okay.

Prayer as a Source of Strength

Prayer is our lifeline in difficult times. It is through prayer that we bring our fears, doubts, and frustrations to God, and in turn, He meets us with peace and comfort. Philippians 4:6-7 encourages us, saying, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

When we pray, we are reminded that we are not alone. We invite God into our situation and ask for His wisdom, His strength, and His intervention. Even when answers don’t come immediately, prayer aligns our hearts with God’s will and provides us with the peace that comes from knowing He is near.

The Power of Community

One of the greatest gifts we have as Christians is the support and encouragement of the Church. When we face difficulties, we are not meant to carry our burdens alone. Galatians 6:2 instructs us, “Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.” In times when our faith feels weak, it is the love and prayers of fellow believers that can lift us up.

Seek out Christian community during your toughest seasons. Surround yourself with those who will pray with you, encourage you, and remind you of God’s promises. Even in moments of doubt, the body of Christ can help restore our hope and remind us that we are not walking through our trials in isolation.

Perseverance in Faith

James 1:2-4 teaches us that trials test our faith and develop perseverance. “Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.”

The process of enduring through hardships refines our character and deepens our reliance on God. When we persevere in faith, we grow spiritually. God uses trials to strengthen us, build our character, and prepare us for the future work He has for us. It is often through the most difficult times that we experience God in the most intimate ways.

The Hope of Eternal Life

Finally, we must remember that the difficulties we face in this life are temporary. 2 Corinthians 4:17-18 reminds us, “For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.”

Even when everything around us seems impossible, we have the hope of eternal life with Christ. No matter how challenging our earthly journey may be, we can trust that God is preparing an eternal future for us that will far exceed anything we face in this life.

with God, all things are possible

Faith is not always easy, especially when circumstances seem impossible. However, the strength of our faith is rooted not in our ability to cope but in God’s ability to carry us through. We can remain in faith by trusting in God’s sovereignty, holding onto His promises, acknowledging our weakness but trusting His strength, praying fervently, relying on community, persevering in hardship, and keeping our eyes fixed on the hope of eternal life.

In the face of the impossible, we can stand firm, knowing that with God, all things are possible (Matthew 19:26). Even in our weakest moments, God is faithful, and He will bring us through. "For nothing will be impossible with God" (Luke 1:37). Let us hold onto that truth and remain in faith, no matter what comes our way.
